Developing Physical Literacy

According to PHE Canada, physical literacy means:

Individuals who are physically literate move with competence and confidence in a wide variety of physical activities in multiple environments that benefit the healthy development of the whole person. (source: PHE Canada)

As gymnastics coaches – especially of preschool age kids – teaching physical literacy skills is EXACTLY what we do. We teach kids to jump, spin, flip, kick, hang, swing, run, skip, hop, balance, use hand-eye coordination… etc.  By teaching these things we are helping kids become confident in how they move their bodies. What important work!!!  We are setting them up for success, no matter what sport they might choose down the road.

Over at Active for Life, they’ve compiled some activities and lesson plans to help teach key physical literacy skills. Check out their resources by CLICKING HERE!  Enjoy!
